You must be at least 18 years old and a resident of Texas (or apply as a non-resident through your home state license). Texas does not require pre-licensing education before you sit for the exam, but the exam is comprehensive, so most people study 30–40 hours before testing.
The license you want is Life Agent English.
The Life, Accident, Health and HMO exam is administered by Pearson VUE at testing centers across Texas and online with remote proctoring. The exam fee is roughly $33 per attempt and you receive your pass/fail result immediately.
You'll need two forms of valid ID at check-in. If you don't pass, you can reschedule and retake it — there is no limit on attempts.
Education isn't mandated in Texas, but a structured course is the fastest path to a first-attempt pass. Look for a program that includes the state exam outline, practice exams, and a pass guarantee.

Texas requires an electronic fingerprint-based background check through IdentoGO (Identogo/Fieldprint service codes are specific to TDI). Fingerprinting costs approximately $40 and results are sent directly to the Texas Department of Insurance.
You can complete fingerprinting before or after the exam — doing it early keeps your application from stalling.
Apply online through NIPR (National Insurance Producer Registry). The Texas application fee is about $50, and most clean applications are approved within a few business days.
Have your exam confirmation, fingerprint receipt, and employment history ready. Disclose any criminal or financial history honestly — non-disclosure is the most common reason applications get denied.
